The Roma Tre – Sapienza PhD joint program in Linguistics aims to provide PhD students with a solid and up-to-date knowledge on main topics concerning languages and how they work across time and space (from the diachronic perspective, related to the Indo-European languages or to the Italian language, to synchronic theoretical and applied approaches, with reference to the different languages of the world but also to Italian).

Historical Linguistics (offered by the Sapienza Rome University)
The curriculum of “Historical linguistics” focuses on methods and issues pertaining to traditional studies on ancient Indo-European languages, but also on the analysis of language change from antiquity to the Middle Ages, and on language contact as animportant trigger of the diffusion of language change.

The curriculum of “Italian linguistics” focuses on methods and issues pertaining to Italian linguistics and dialectology. This curriculum therefore includes linguistic analyses concerning texts from early Vulgar up to contemporary ages, dialectological studies and Italo -Romance lexicographic studies. The general perspective will also be open to traditional studies in general and historical linguistics.

The curriculum of “General and Applied linguistics” focuses on methods and issues pertaining to synchronic and applied linguistics. PhD students will be introduced to the theories and methods of synchronic linguistics, as well as to features and categories of languages. As for applied linguistics, the curriculum focuses both on language acquisition and on L2 teaching/learning. PhD students will also be introduced to corpus linguistics, explained by means of innovative methods.

The curriculum of “Acoustic Phonetics” develops a relevant area of linguistics. It takes advantage of ascientific partnership with "Fondazione Ugo Bordoni", which provides the PhD students with a high qualification in Acoustic Phonetics and its applications.
It also trains PhD students both in research and in self-employed professions, such as consultants to public and private institutions– courts, lawyers, companies working in media or in the advanced tertiary sector.
